Professor Muzaffer Ahmad (1935-2012) was a highly respected economist, environmental activist, an exponent of citizen’s rights and good governance. As a teacher at Dhaka University, he distinguished himself with his scholarship and also as a campaigner for non-party faculty politics. As the President of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) or Bangladesh Environment Movement, he was both an inspiring leader and an untiring demonstrator often standing in human chain movements for the protection of the threatened environment, specially for the highly vulnerable river Burhiganga. Professor Ahmad will always be remembered by his fellows academics for his scholarly works such as the one on Public Enterprise (with Professor Rehman Sobhan) and admired by his activist colleagues for his selfless leadership in environmental movements. Professor Ahmad was honored by the State with the prestigious national award ‘Ekushey Padak’ (2014, posthumously) for his dedicated services to the society. I pray for eternal peace of is departed soul.
The Professor Muzaffer Ahmad Smriti (Memorial) Sangsad gratefully acknowledges his contributions to development thinking in Bangladesh. The Sangsad is run by a group of individuals who are dedicated to carry forward the ideals and aspirations of Professor Ahmad.
